Mattoon Middle School’s Anieta Trame was selected as Illinois Reading Council’s Reading Educator of the Year for grades sixth-twelfth. Trame, media specialist, was honored during Tuesday’s school board meeting.
“Anieta’s commitment to literacy beyond the scope of school is what makes her a logical recipient for the award,” said Jeremie Smith, principal, MMS. “Programs in education come and go but perseverance and unrelenting commitment by Anieta has kept the Ready to Read Across Mattoon program not just alive but, thriving and growing. It has become a piece of our community identity and that doesn’t happen by accident.”
The criteria for this award should be a person who has a passion for reading, said Smith.
“But more than that, I would say they would have the desire to instill that passion into children,” Smith said.  “Anieta individualizes her efforts and wants to help each child ignite the flame for the love of reading. She doesn’t allow boundaries for resources and she makes the media center feel like it’s the best place on earth.”
Trame said she is proud and humbled to be selected for the award but quickly credits the students, teachers and community members for their dedication to the middle school’s reading program.
“You could select anyone of our reading teachers to receive this award,” said Trame.
Last year, Ingrid Minger, reading teacher, MMS, received this same award making it the second consecutive year MMS received this honor.
