How the MMS Reading Committee selects the title

by Mollie Auer

During the spring, the Student Reading Committee receives the new list of potential books for the upcoming school year. From spring until about November, the Student Reading Committee of Mattoon Middle School has the challenging job of eliminating books off of the special list.

Being a member of the Student Reading Committee is no easy feat. When deciding which book will be “the book,” each and every member has to look for five key things:

· How long or short is the book?

· Would this book appeal to the entire community?

· Are the cover(s) of the book gender neutral?

· Is this book too predictable or boring?

· Has the Reading Committee chosen a book like this in any of the past years?
