Wrestlers honored for award winning season

Mattoon Middle School wrestlers were recognized for their second place win at state during a reception March 16. The Wildcat wrestling team placed second out of 101 teams at the state competition. It was the first time the team earned a significant placement at the state level. MMS Princpal Jeremie Smith congratulated the wrestlers and their coaches. Both Smith and Coach Michael Stanley described the level of dedication of each of the team members and applauded the students' enthusiasm throughout summer camps, grueling practices and a season which includes many road trips. Smith also recognized the wrestlers' families and friends who supported the team. Stanley is excited for those wrestlers moving onto the high school team and looking foward to returning team members.
Pete Stanley, Michael's brother, coaches the youth wrestlers who were also honored for their season. Pete Stanley, like his brother, also envisioned his crew of young wrestlers moving on and posting many wins at the middle school and high school level. Both Stanley brothers are alumni of Mattoon High School and represented the district as wrestlers winning numerous awards.
Peyton Lane earned the State Champion title for a third time in the 105- pound class. Lane is the only athlete from MMS to earn multiple State Champion titles in wrestling. Lane is the state record holder for the quickest pin in a championship bout in the 75-pound class. Richard Wright placed second in the 65-pound class. Hayden Stanley took second in the 90-pound class. Coby Haney placed fifth in the 65-pound class. Rase Janes took sixth place in the 75-pound class. Kiefer Duncan placed sixth in the 85-pound class. Cameron Knierim qualified for state and won a match.
