During this mandated time of social distancing, Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 teachers are provided with professional development opportunities through virtual coaching and information offered online.

Christy Hild, student services director, said this unique situation has allowed the district to expand personalized learning efforts for staff.  Because of time constraints throughout the school year, enhanced learning for teachers isn’t often prioritized.

“We all want to be with our students, but this period of school closure has presented an opportunity to find innovative ways to stay connected with them and keep learning ourselves,” said Hild.

The goal is to equip teachers with learning opportunities they find interesting and allow them to learn at their own pace, similar to the district’s initiatives to create personalized learning for its students.

Learning is administered through a BINGO board of options, Schoology courses, and online virtual coaching.  The coaching team is comprised of Mattoon teachers. To view the BINGO board, click the following link below named BINGO or click the thumbnail.

Teachers are able to access a virtual coach by clicking links to Google Hangout. Virtual coaches provide assistance by answering questions and orchestrating conversations with a group.   These conversations are designed to share ideas and spur learning opportunities for teachers and students.

The district is working towards a plan in 2021 where all students and staff will be assigned laptops.  Learning will continue at home regardless of the weather or emergency situations.  The learning offered at this time will give teachers a chance to operate these virtual platforms with other teachers and coaches as a way to prepare for student learning.

The topics and the way this learning is delivered are as follows:

-Opportunities for coaching, connection support with social emotional learning Leader in Me, and staff emotional support.

-Google Hangouts with coaches to answer questions and provide support with curriculum, assessment, or competency-based education topics.

-Tech coaching and support to ask questions from "what learning options are available in the Google or Schoology platforms" to "how can I connect with my students at home.”

Hild thanked the district’s tech team for creating the schedule and opening up the technical means to make these learning opportunities possible.

“I would also like to recognize how fortunate we are to have staff members serving as virtual coaches,” said Hild.  “All of our teachers are working hard to stay connected with and provide opportunities for their students. The coaches are here to support them in those efforts.”
