Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 was selected for a $2 million grant that will be applied for improvements to the running track and athletic field at Mattoon High School.

Tim Condron, incoming Mattoon school superintendent, thanked the efforts of Sen. Dale Righter and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in helping MCUSD2 secure the grant.

The grant will fund costs associated with replacement of the track and installation of artificial turf on the football field.

“This grant program is utilizing state funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly as indicated in Public Act 101-0007 and/or Public Act 101-0029. The total amount of grant funds for this award is $2 million,” according to information from the Illinois General Assembly.

Condron said school leaders are currently researching track and athletic surfaces at other school districts and will use the information to design a proposal for MHS.

“We are humbled and honored for this wonderful opportunity,” said Condron. “Lifelong memories and friendships can be built at Gaines Field and on the MHS track. Middle school and high school track and field, football, band, cheer, dance and the recognition of seniors are all moments our students may carry with them throughout their lives. The track is a place many community members come to pursue their personal health goals. It is also a classroom for young families introducing healthy habits to their children who are our future leaders. We believe this will have a significant impact on our students, families, staff, and community members for years to come.”
