Students praise health occ program for experiences in medical field

Mattoon High School students enrolled in health occupations said the experiences offered in the program provide application skills in the medical field and life skills.
Berkley Howell, health occupations student, said the class introduces students to different aspects of the medical profession.
“The program is a fun, hands on experience to learn the skills needed to become a CNA such as shaving, bathing, feeding and dressing a resident or patient,” said Howell.
Students participate in Certified Nursing Assistant clinicals in a hospital and nursing home setting along with earning the CNA certificate upon passage of the state exam.
“Not only does the program allow students to become a registered CNA, but it allows them to experience the hospital in a real world setting,” said Maddie Sharp, student, health occupations. “This class is perfect for any Mattoon senior interested in the healthcare field.”
Both Sharp and Howell agreed the benefits of the class surpassed achieving a CNA license.
“This experience has taught us quality aspects of life and life lessons that apply outside of the medical field as well,” said Howell. “This is an opportunity that you will not regret.”
Sharp added, “Even if you do not want to be a CNA or a nurse at some point in your life, this class allows you to see other areas of the hospital at the end of the year for shadowing.”
