MCUSD2 Transportation

Welcome to Mattoon Community Unit 2’s Transportation Department. While moving more than 1,200 students twice each day may not qualify as “rocket science,” there are many behind the scenes activities that enable us to provide this service in a consistent safe way. Just like the United States Postal Service, we must be prepared to provide this service on days when the weather can be very challenging. Everyone of our fleet of 35 school buses is inspected twice each year and must be “tested” by a state approved safety center. That insures that the buses our students are riding on are safe and all the safety equipment is operational. A school bus is only as safe as the driver behind the wheel, and getting a license to operate a school bus is no

easy task. Several hours of studying and attending a class taught by a Certified State of Illinois School Bus Instructor is the first step in obtaining a school bus driver permit. Drivers must first obtain a Commercial Drivers License {CDL} prior to completing the requirements of the school bus permit. Once licensed, drivers must complete an annual physical and drug screen as well as a “refresher” course to review any new requirements that are mandated from Springfield.
Another important part of keeping our students safe is reminding them every year of how the safety devices on the buses work and what to do in the event of an emergency.
I am proud to say that the quality of our drivers and the safety of our equipment are second to none. If you are a parent or guardian that sends your student to the bus each morning, you can rest assured that they are in good hands.
Your questions or concerns are always important to us. Let us know if we can help.
