The Mattoon High School Greenwave JROTC Archery Team enjoyed another successful season, competing in 11 tournaments ranging from local meets with seven teams to the JROTC National Championship featuring 66 teams from across the nation.
In April, the team delivered an outstanding performance at the Illinois JROTC State Tournament, capturing 1st place in both the Bullseye and 3D Animal Target competitions. Individually, Mark Winans and Kelsey Tucker were recognized as the top overall male and female JROTC archers in the state, each earning a custom competition bow valued at more than $600. In addition, three senior members of the Greenwave Archery Team were awarded Illinois State Archery Scholarships in recognition of their performance and dedication to the sport.
In May, the Greenwave Archery Team traveled to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, to compete at the JROTC National Championship against teams from across the United States and its territories, including competitors from as far away as Saipan. Team Captain Kelsey Tucker earned an impressive 2nd-place individual finish in the Bullseye competition, scoring 291 out of a possible 300 points. As a team, Mattoon High School placed 6th overall in Bullseye and 11th overall in the 3D competition, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest level of JROTC archery.
Congratulations to our cadet archers on an outstanding season and for representing Mattoon High School with skill, discipline, and sportsmanship. Their accomplishments reflect the hard work, commitment, and teamwork that define the MHS Greenwave JROTC program.
