6th Grade Ancient Greece Architecture Project

Mattoon Middle School students in Mrs. Seaman’s and Mrs. Campbell's classes have been studying Ancient Greece and its impact on our modern society. Grecian influence is everywhere! The students just spent a week focusing on the architecture of Greece to discover why these amazing structures have lasted through earthquakes, extreme weather, and wars. They began their exploration completing a lab to discover which shapes are the strongest. They created cylinders, triangular prisms, and rectangular prisms of paper, then stacked books on top to see which shape held the most weight before collapsing. During the experiment, we even had a special guest builder-Mr. Pugh, principal, MMS. After discovering the strongest shape, (spoiler: cylinders) they created a structure of paper that could withstand the weight of their social studies book without falling over. We found out that cylinders are the strongest which is why the Greeks used them in their buildings.
