two MMS spelling bee champions pictured holding their award/certifications

In December, Mattoon Middle School hosted its annual Spelling Bee. Twenty-five sixth, seventh, and eighth graders competed. The format for the competition was a traditional spell-down, in which each speller received one word per round.

Seventh-grader Kahlyn Fritz was the school champion, and eighth-grader Gunner Bartels received second place.

Congratulations to these winners and to all who participated!
