MHS Futures Day. Student speaking with a college rep

Mattoon High School students got a firsthand look at post-high school opportunities during the annual Futures Day held March 27, 2026. This event gave students the chance to connect with professionals and learn about career pathways,

Organized with the help of a dedicated Futures Day Planning Committee (made up of four students), the event was built around student interests and feedback. Committee members analyzed survey data to identify gaps in career representation, reached out to local businesses and personal connections, coordinated logistics, and even developed promotional materials. Additional student support from the Chrome Depot ensured the event’s technology ran smoothly.

This year’s Futures Day featured nearly 90 representatives from a wide range of industries, including healthcare, law enforcement, education, trades, and the arts. Students rotated through breakout sessions, explored booths at the college and career fair, and engaged directly with professionals to ask questions and gain insight into potential career paths.

One of the most memorable moments of the day came when an Air Evac helicopter landed on the practice field. Students had the unique opportunity to sit inside, meet the flight crew, and learn more about emergency medical services and the skills required for careers in the field.

A new addition in 2026 expanded opportunities for seniors enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. These students participated in on-site interviews with local employers, received feedback on their resumes, and built valuable connections with industry professionals. The goal of this initiative is to provide students with direct pathways into the workforce and strengthen ties between education and local career opportunities.

School leaders hope to continue growing Futures Day in the years ahead, with plans to expand interview opportunities and introduce life skills workshops that will further prepare students for success beyond high school.

Futures Day continues to be a meaningful experience for MHS students, offering real-world exposure and helping them take important steps toward their future careers.
