Mattoon Middle School recently welcomed a strong lineup of local professionals for its 5th Annual Community Speaker Day, held Tuesday, April 7. The event brought together community members and students for an afternoon focused on real-world careers and future possibilities.
This year’s theme, “Jobs Within Our Community,” gave students a closer look at the opportunities right here in Mattoon and the surrounding area. Speakers from a wide range of fields spent time with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, sharing what they do, who they serve, and how they got started in their careers.
Throughout the afternoon, each speaker rotated through small groups of students, delivering short, engaging presentations. The format allowed students to hear from multiple professionals and ask questions in a more personal setting. From skilled trades and healthcare to business and public service, the variety of careers represented helped students see the many paths available to them.
In addition to describing their day-to-day work, speakers offered practical advice tailored to middle school students, encouraging them to stay focused, work hard, and begin thinking about their interests and goals early on.
Community Speaker Day continues to be a meaningful tradition at MMS, connecting students with local professionals and helping them better understand how their education today can shape their future.
