The Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 Board of Education recognized Steve Conlon for his induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame April 30, 2022.
"We are not surprised that Steve would receive this honor as he has been a leader, mentor and coach to our students for years," said Michelle Skinlo, president, Mattoon school board.
Jamie Sharp, athletic director, Mattoon Middle School, perfectly described Steve as never being about the scoreboard. "Steve competes to win but his focus has always been on developing the person and the athlete and helping them to be a good person in whatever they do in life," said Sharp.
Skinlo added, "Steve, a retired Mattoon school district teacher, was also a leader in the classroom, quickly providing support to students in class and also helping them through personal challenges. The stories are numerous of Steve and his late wife Nancy, also a teacher, extending their assistance to students above and beyond what is expected."
"We are proud that Steve is part of the Mattoon school district family and we are pleased that he has earned this honor. It is a well-deserved recognition," said Skinlo.
