Students across the district came together in a big way this year to support Socktober, an initiative that provides warm socks to families in need. Fourth graders from both Williams Elementary and Riddle Elementary played key leadership roles, helping turn this project into a success.
At Williams, several students volunteered to design posters promoting the Socktober drive. This project was part of their service-learning activities during Green and Gold Day. Other fourth-graders collected and counted socks during their recess each day for a week. Two additional students wrote broadcast scripts about Socktober, appeared as guest hosts on WES News, and made whole-school announcements sharing grade-level totals to boost excitement and participation. Their efforts helped Williams students collect over 650 pairs of socks.
At Riddle Elementary, students were just as committed to making Socktober a success. Fourth-graders created colorful, eye-catching posters to advertise the drive as part of their own service-learning project during Green and Gold Day. Six students volunteered their time each day for a week to collect, sort, and count donations. Their dedication contributed to a school total of over 300 pairs of socks.
In all, Riddle and Williams collected more than 950 pairs of socks, which will be distributed to local families during the One Stop Community Christmas event in December.
Laura Smith, SEL Instructional Coach and Williams Co-Lighthouse Coordinator, supported students throughout the project and helped guide the service-learning components at both schools.
