Students and staff across the district came together on Wednesday, September 23 for the annual Green & Gold Day of Service, giving back through a variety of service projects throughout the community and region.
Nearly 60 groups from Mattoon High School spread out across the community, completing service projects at 28 locations throughout the day. The number of locations served increased by 12% from last year.
Students took part in a variety of projects, including, but not limited to:
Cleaning headstones at Dodge Grove Cemetery
Assisting with pet care at Doggie Depot and the Coles County Animal Shelter
Cleaning roads in partnership with the City of Mattoon and Rotary Club
Helping with community gardens and outdoor cleanup at local parks and the Douglas-Hart Nature Center
Assisting teachers and students at Student Life Academy
Washing and decorating windows at local businesses
Organizing donations and assisting at the food pantry, Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities
Supporting firefighters at Lincoln Fire Protection District
Serving lunch to first responders
Creating gifts and visiting with assisted living residents
LIFT Central Illinois also joined the effort, with students extending the spirit of service beyond our local community through projects in communities throughout the region.
The impact of Green & Gold Day was made even greater through the participation of families, alumni, community members and local organizations who helped make these service opportunities possible.
