Mattoon Foundation for Academic Excellence Announces the Community Engagement Grants of $14,600

Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation has awarded five Community Engagement grants through the Mattoon Foundation for Academic Excellence Fund. The awards were presented on November 5, 2025 at Elevate CCIC during the foundation’s Fall Grant Reception.

Rachel Schafer received $1,600 for the recycling grant this year from the Foundation to continue the Recycling Program started at Arland D. Williams Jr. Elementary School last year.

Schafer received another grant, along with Jodi Maleske, to be used for educational Family Game Nights at Williams and Riddle Elementary Schools. Both Schafer and Maleske received $1,000. 

Tracey Perry received $1,000, with funds going towards the Franklin Preschool Parent Advisory team. 

Vincent Walk received $10,000 to support the Financial Literacy program started last year for parents, students, and community partners. 

The Mattoon Foundation for Academic Excellence operates under Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation, established in 2009 through a merger of Effingham County Community Foundation and Mattoon Area Community Foundation, and serves communities in southeastern Illinois. 

Mattoon High School Inducts Six New Members into the Wall of Fame

Mattoon High School (MHS) proudly welcomed six new members into its Athletic Wall of Fame during the 2026 Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, January 9.

New members include Benjamin Capitosti, Madden Johnson, Cale Kimbro, Kameron Lathrop, Isabella Masse, and Blair Powers. In addition to honoring the newest inductees, Dave Vieth, former MHS Athletic Director, was also recognized for his induction into the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.

Leadership in Action: Franklin Preschool’s Student Lighthouse Team

Franklin Preschool's Student Lighthouse Team met for the first time in January. Students on the team were selected for their exemplary leadership skills. During this meeting, students discussed and learned about different organizations to consider for Franklin Preschool's upcoming Coin Wars.

Students also discussed potential celebration ideas to reward Franklin students for meeting their SWIG of reading over 10,000 books.
