The Mattoon High School Pride of the Green Wave Band and Choir made school history this past Saturday at the IHSA State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Heritage High School.
For the first time, each Mattoon High School entry received a First Place rating!
The following students under the direction of Angi Dallas, Mattoon High School Choir director, received First Place ratings in the solo category: Madeline Cohoon, Sadie Brazzell, Shaylin Sparks and Trinity Crowe.
The following students under the direction of Todd Black, Mattoon High School Band Director, received First Place ratings in the solo category: Brie Armstrong, Bryce Wofford, Chase Armstrong, Gabe Freeman, Keenan Kersh, Kristofer Jacobs, Kyla Abbott, Luke Ferris, Nate Huddleston, and in the ensemble category Mason Holland and Luke Ferris received a first place rating.
At the end of the competition, which included participants from 28 schools with a mixture of Big 12 and Apollo and other conference programs, each judge gave an award entitled "Best of Day" for the best performance that they heard in their room. Out of the 3 rooms that Mattoon High School Band students performed in they were awarded 2 Best of Day Awards. In the upper brass room, Luke Ferris was awarded Best of Day for his trumpet solo. In the percussion room, Gabe Freeman was awarded the Best of Day Award for his snare drum solo.

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) testing is soon approaching for our elementary schools during the weeks of March 14th and March 21st. Both buildings have fun-filled activities and exciting positive incentives for giving effort/grit throughout testing.
Something else we would like to share with our students to kick off the week of showcasing genius is a "Hype Video!"
We are asking for YOUR help! Please share a quick video providing helpful tips, encouragement, words of wisdom, etc. to our students taking IAR.

The MHS Student Tech Leadership team has been meeting with the younger district tech leaders in the district. The teams are swapping ideas and tips and talking about future needs that could be met. Pictured is the MHS team with the Riddle Elementary tech team.
Last week the MHS team visited Williams Elementary and next week they will head to MMS.

In honor of KIDINS 220 Awareness Day 2022, Franklin Preschool teamed up with the Middle School to share information about the rare disease. MMS students read books, played, and shared Zebra cakes with the Franklin students.
Franklin Alumni Michael Hagen is one of the 27 kids with this disease. Zebra Stripes are a symbol of KIDINS220.

Friday, February 25th was KIDINS 220 Awareness Day 2022. Franklin Preschool wanted to spread some joy and love for the 27 kids in the world with the rare disease of KIDINS220.

The following band students participated in the Apollo Conference Honor Band Festival at Mt. Zion High School Auditorium yesterday, March 1.
From the Mattoon High School Band the following students performed in the jazz band : Andrew Brinckschroeder, Gabe Parks, Luke Ferris and Daniel Catt.

On Tuesday, Feb 22nd Riddle & Williams Elementary hosted a Family Book Night for parents and caregivers. This opportunity provided activities to introduce The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families through the work of renowned author Stephen Covey. During the in-person sessions, families participate in activities to demonstrate the 7 Habits while learning to apply them to their own unique family units. The online component provides support for families as they dig deeper into the 7 Habits at home. Facilitators of this program are Mrs. Laura Smith and Mrs. Andrea Orr. Funding is provided through a grant from the Southeastern Community Foundation.
The next 7 Habits of Effective Families Book Night will be held on March, 22nd at 6:30 pm. Even if you missed the previous event, you are still welcome to attend.




The Mattoon JROTC Drill Team traveled to Leavenworth, Kansas for the 10th Annual Pioneer Drill Team Competition at Leavenworth High School on February 26, 2022. Mattoon received the People's Choice Award (thank you to our supporting parents!) and Cadet Shelby Pickering ('25) took 2nd Place in the IDD (Individual Drill Demonstration). Cadet Pickering placed 2nd out of over 500 cadets in this competition, demonstrating her superior attention to detail and excellence in her sport. Shelby represented MHS well!
