The Mattoon High School Pride of the Green Wave Band and Choir made school history this past Saturday at the IHSA State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Heritage High School.
For the first time, each Mattoon High School entry received a First Place rating!
The following students under the direction of Angi Dallas, Mattoon High School Choir director, received First Place ratings in the solo category: Madeline Cohoon, Sadie Brazzell, Shaylin Sparks and Trinity Crowe.
The following students under the direction of Todd Black, Mattoon High School Band Director, received First Place ratings in the solo category: Brie Armstrong, Bryce Wofford, Chase Armstrong, Gabe Freeman, Keenan Kersh, Kristofer Jacobs, Kyla Abbott, Luke Ferris, Nate Huddleston, and in the ensemble category Mason Holland and Luke Ferris received a first place rating.
At the end of the competition, which included participants from 28 schools with a mixture of Big 12 and Apollo and other conference programs, each judge gave an award entitled "Best of Day" for the best performance that they heard in their room. Out of the 3 rooms that Mattoon High School Band students performed in they were awarded 2 Best of Day Awards. In the upper brass room, Luke Ferris was awarded Best of Day for his trumpet solo. In the percussion room, Gabe Freeman was awarded the Best of Day Award for his snare drum solo.

The MHS Student Tech Leadership team has been meeting with the younger district tech leaders in the district. The teams are swapping ideas and tips and talking about future needs that could be met. Pictured is the MHS team with the Riddle Elementary tech team.
Last week the MHS team visited Williams Elementary and next week they will head to MMS.

Mattoon School District will dismiss two and a half hours early today Feb. 24, 2022 due to forecasted weather. Lunches will be served. All school activities are canceled including YMCA After School Program and Stretch Time.

Riddle at 12:40 p.m.

The MHS Student Tech Leadership team headed over to Williams Elementary to collaborate with the youngest of our district tech leaders. The two teams swapped ideas and tips as they collaborated on future needs that could be met.
MHS eLearning Reminders for Students
Mattoon School District’s teachers have the great opportunity to partner with Dr. Scott McLeod to increase deeper learning, personalization, authentic work, and technology infusion in their classrooms. Mattoon High School teachers have worked directly with Dr. McLeod and are ready to incorporate their new learning strategies. The English and Foreign Language departments collaborated on areas of strengths and growth areas around the 4 Shifts.
The Mattoon JV Wavettes are the State Champions for IDTA in pom, jazz, and lyrical. They are also the grand champions overall for the JV division. In addition, they were a awarded the high point score for their pom routine. The team is coached by Emily Bacino Althuas. Great job, ladies!
The Mattoon Varsity Wavettes brought home 2nd place in the pom division from the IDTA state series. Seniors Katie Clatfelter, Justyce Prather, and Annelise Overmyer all competed on Friday night in the solo division as well. The Varsity team is coached by Malia Smith. Congratulations, ladies!
English 4 students in Ms. Ciara Shook’s class brought a modern twist to William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Based on their reading analysis, students were given the task of creating a lock screen, home screen, or a Snapchat that characters of Macbeth might have posted. Students were having a great time discussing and sharing their work.

Students must check in to Schoology by 10:00 am. After 10:00 a.m., students will engage in course-specific learning activities in Schoology with directions from their teachers. Students will need to engage with each course to be considered in attendance for the full day. Connection with the teacher is an expectation of an eLearning day.

The class will be offered six Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM starting February 2, 2022 with the final class being March 9, 2022. The two-hour preparation class will have one hour devoted to math instruction with specific lessons on calculator use and one hour devoted to reading instruction. The course will be taught by Mattoon High School math and English teachers.
Students who participate in the SAT preparation class will each receive the SAT Prep Plus 22 practice booklet with sample problems to work through and practice tests. Participants will take a pretest to guide the instructional needs of each student through the six-week course.

Mattoon High School would like to invite students to participate in Power Hour. Power Hour is an after-school tutorial opportunity offered Monday through Thursday from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM. Students who are eligible for district transportation are eligible for transportation home after Power Hour. Interested students may sign-up for Power Hour by completing the following form.

If Power Hour doesn't work for your child's schedule, then Lunch and Learn may be for them! Lunch and Learn is offered Monday through Friday during each lunch period. Lunch and Learn teachers are available to help with homework or to provide tutorial help. Lunch and Learn is also a great place just to read or study quietly. Interested students can come to room 208 after getting their lunch.

The Emery Claire Foundation scholarship will be offered to a high school senior who aspires to continue their education at the college level in a healthcare field. The award will be $1,500.
Eligibility Requirements: The applicant must (1) have good academic standings, (2) have some school involvement (work experience may be considered) and (3) have good citizenship/behavior.
