Members of the Mattoon FFA chapter attended the 96th annual Illinois State FFA Convention June 11-13 along with more than 5,000 other FFA members, advisors, and guests. With a 2024 theme of “United As One,” the three-day event annually recognizes achievements of Illinois FFA members, elects the major state officer team, and celebrates agriculture. 🚜
During the convention, the following awards were presented to the Mattoon FFA chapter.
Illinois State FFA Degree: Savannah Cole and Abigial Niemeyer were conferred with State FFA Degrees by the Illinois Association for meeting all requirements including productive financial investments and earnings in a supervised agricultural experience and FFA participation, leadership, and academic excellence. The State FFA Degree is the highest achievement an FFA member can achieve in Illinois; less than 2% of members statewide earn this prestigious recognition. 💙💛
Emma Spencer was also nominated to play in the FFA Band. 🎺
Students at the convention were greeted with activities including a career fair featuring colleges and agribusinesses and an opportunity to engage in the history of Illinois’ capital city. The sessions featured addresses by National FFA Western Region Vice President Emily Gossett of New Mexico and from each of the retiring major state officers. 💙💛
STEAM Summer Camp was held at Riddle Elementary School from June 3-7. Students from both Riddle and Williams engaged in the Engineering Design Process to develop and create game remixes. 🎮 These games were based on classic favorites but with a creative twist designed by the STEAM Camp members. ✨🌟
Using 3D printing, laser cutting, and graphic design skills, our talented campers brought their ideas to life. At the end of the week, students showcased and played their games with family and community members on Friday afternoon. 🖨️🖌️ 🎉

MHS held Growing Roots, a Spring Conference for various schools, on April 29th. Our MHS staff and students dived into leadership and the Leader in Me program, sharing perspectives and collaborating on action plans. 🌟💡

The Williams Elementary School Run Club had an incredible year! The number of students on the Busted Chart doubled, with over 60 students running over 35 miles! 👏🎉🏃♂️
Special shoutout to Jax Wilson (pictured), the first kindergartner to achieve this milestone! The Top 25 Board was also very competitive, with Dylan Gonzalez leading the pack as the #1 runner out of 704 students, clocking in an impressive 73 miles! 🏅🎈

Due to the forecasted high temperatures next week, we have made the decision to reschedule the MHS Youth Football Camp. The new dates will be Monday, July 15 through Wednesday, July 17. Camp times remain the same: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. for students entering grades 3-5, and 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. for students entering grades 6-8. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope for more comfortable weather on the new dates.

On Monday, May 13, 2024, Riddle Elementary School hosted its first STEAM Family Night! Families were able to participate in a variety of activities that utilized the Engineering Design Process to solve a problem. The activities were led by the Riddle STEAM Club, which is a group of fourth and fifth grade students, who display leadership qualities and strive for academic excellence. At the close of the evening, a Sphero Mini STEAM Kit was raffled to families, and the winner was Maxine Elder, a second grade student in Mrs. Boyer's classroom. Fun was had by all as they used their critical thinking skills to problem solve! ✨👨👩👧👦🔧
The Mattoon Police Department's Union recently gave a generous donation to Franklin Preschool's Summer Backpack Food Program. Returning Franklin families who signed up for the program, will receive food in June and July.🥫

The EIASE Recycling Center recently held an end-of-year celebration with students at the Silver Star Skate Center. MHS students Keith Lauter and Katina Terrell, along with MHS staff members Dana Freeman and Dana Koester, were able to attend the event! 🛼⛳
The Eastern Illinois Area of Special Education Recycling Program is an opportunity for students with various ability levels to come together and gain work experience. This program is designed to teach students skills they can use in the workplace or in their everyday lives after finishing high school. This past year, we had three MHS students that attended three days a week. ♻️
