Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 qualifies for the new P-EBT program designed to support families for the purchase of food products. The following are highlights of the new P-EBT program: -Mattoon students are automatically enrolled in the P-EBT program and are scheduled to receive a card in the mail sometime between March and May. Each child will receive their own card with their names on it. The cards will come in a plain white envelope. It is not marked for security and privacy which makes it easy to miss. Families should be aware to watch for it so it does not get accidentally thrown away. The cards will be loaded with funds based on the days they attended remote learning and did not receive lunches. - Benefits will be loaded on each month starting on the 11th day through the 22nd day depending on the first letter of the child’s last name. In March, they will receive the funds to cover the missed lunches from August through December 2020. In April they will receive January 2021 through March 2021. During second quarter in Joy Miller’s art class, students from Arland D. Williams Jr. Elementary School went on a virtual field trip to outer space. One of the art lessons was a choice to submit an essay to NASA about traveling to the moon. Eight Williams Elementary School students chose to participate, with family permission, and wrote lovely essays about who they would take to the moon and what technologies they would want to leave behind on the moon for future generations. NASA was so impressed with all the submissions from students around the country that they have decided to send a digital of every essay aboard Artemis 1 as it launches to orbit the moon this summer! Our Williams Elementary School students are: (pictured in no particular order) Alexis Cease, Hallie Bell, Madison Heaton, Madilyn Weaver, Riley Cease, Rylen Vang, Chloe Henderson (Not Pictured) Corbin Rusk (Not Pictured) Congratulations Williams Elementary!
The Mattoon High School Wavettes traditionally perform with a special person in their family for the final basketball performance. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this was not possible. Coach Malia Smith and Coach Hillary Love wanted to make sure the varsity and junior varsity Wavettes had this special moment with their family members. The seniors have the honor of dancing with both of their parents. This year the seniors were able to continue this and all four were able to have both mom and dad by their sides. It was such a wonderful moment to have these dancers on the floor with the people they love, said Smith. Due to COVID-19 limitations, we have two separate videos: junior varsity and varsity. https://youtu.be/BWn7tmfbrHE https://youtu.be/QNIP9XzRngI
