The MMS Agricultural department and greenhouse are experiencing exponential growth with a diverse array of plants, animals, and donations! π±πΏπ
The LIFT Building and Mr. Compton generously donated an aquaponics unit from a senior capstone project to the greenhouse. The 8th graders will take the helm in learning about aquaponics. ππ
Deb Garretson, former MMS teacher, graciously donated two large banana trees for the greenhouse, raising hopes of harvesting bananas in the future. π
The Enyart Family donated a 40-gallon aquarium for the classroom, initiating a fish habitat project. π
The Kaufman family, once again, contributed fertilized eggs, igniting the spring chick incubation process. π₯π£
The FFA and agricultural classes have been diligently seeding and planting geraniums, wave petunias, tomatoes, peppers, zinnias, and marigolds for their plant sale this month and May. They also took care of many plants from staff members over the winter, addressing any needs to ensure the plants are healthy and ready for another year! π»π©βπΎπΈπ

MMS Student Council hosted the inaugural Leadership Conference on Friday, March 8, 2024! Oakland Lake Crest Elementary and Shelbyville Moulton Middle School were in attendance.π
The workshop aimed to empower students with leadership skills, enlighten them about IAJHSC memberships, foster connections with fellow council members from different schools, and encourage mutual inspiration and idea-sharing. π‘
Each delegate participated in group dynamic activities designed to teach leadership skills. We are proud of the hard work our students put into planning and facilitating this event and grateful for the students in attendance. πΌπ€

We are excited to announce that students throughout the district will have the opportunity to view the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse at their schools. ππ
Mattoon will experience a partial eclipse of 99.37% beginning at approximately 12:46 p.m. with the time of maximum coverage at approximately 2:04 p.m. π
To help students better understand the science behind a solar eclipse, many teachers will incorporate this into their teaching this week prior to the eclipse. π©βπ«
We will be reviewing expectations and safety precautions with students to ensure a fun and memorable experience. Students and staff will be supplied with the ISO 12312-2 International Standard eclipse safe glasses that they will be required to wear during the viewing. π
School specific information regarding the event timeline has been emailed to families. Please communicate with your childβs teacher if you wish for your student to opt out of this event. Due to their age, students at Franklin Preschool will not be participating in the viewing, but will instead be participating in mini lessons and activities surrounding the eclipse. βοΈ
