Mr. Wheeler's third graders at Riddle Elementary celebrated the end of their fractions unit before spring break by eating 1/8 of a pizza each! Ok, we admit it, some students had two eighths! ;) What better way to learn than with pizza though? #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary

Mattoon CUSD #2 bus drivers will be taking part in a mock bus crash training exercise with the Mattoon Fire Department at First Class Wrecker Service in Mattoon. Training is scheduled for April 13, 14, and 15 at 9 AM. The Fire Department will take two of our oldest buses, flip them on their side, and train drivers as if they are on an actual accident scene. They will make entry into the buses using extraction tools. Transportation Director Chris Parr believes it will be very beneficial for the District staff and all our First Responders. “It is a great time to observe, ask questions that come up, and see what they will do when they arrive on the scene, which will help us see what we need to do on our end. Knowing what to expect from all first responders and having those conversations beforehand is huge for all departments involved. Nobody ever wants something like this to happen, but I am excited we get this opportunity to prepare ourselves if it ever does.” We would like to extend our gratitude to our First Responders for their willingness to be proactive and prepared in their service to our students and community. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #Transportation

In honor of National Library Week, Mrs. Muzzy, Riddle School Librarian would like to recognize some people that are important to the running of Riddle School Library. It truly does take a village! Kris Gambrill is the library paraprofessional, working with all the students each week to help them get just the right books, keeping track of Monarch and Bluestem reading, and tending to the mountains of books going in and out each week. She is pictured with Mrs. Daniel's kindergarten class Kennady Drennan is a Mattoon High School Helper taking an Early Childhood Clinical Class and has been spending an hour and a half in the library each day second semester working with students, teaching lessons, making displays and jumping right in to assist any way she can. Tonya Norviel has been volunteering in the library weekly for several years. She reads stories to kids, listens to students read, helps prep new books, and shelves books. Thank you from Mrs. Muzzy and the rest of the staff at Riddle! #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary

Riddle Elementary has its first newspaper that's created FOR students BY students! The paper is called "The Riddle Reporter" and is created and edited by Chloe Ervin, Rosemary Cook, Addison Perkins, and Annalie Wang. In each issue, these four interview students and staff, take photos, create advertisements, and sketch comics. They meet twice a week to work on the Reporter. Pictured is issue #4. Big shout-out to these students for all of the hard work that they put into making this dream of theirs come true. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary

Mrs. Hawbaker, twelve of her students, and Ms. Craig at Riddle Elementary have decided to participate in the 3,000 squats challenge in April for the children's heart foundation to support congenital heart failure. They will be doing 90 squats at school each day with homework of 10 each night and 100 each day on the weekends to get 3,000 squats a piece for the month of April! Mrs. Hawbaker is sponsoring each kid that completes the challenge for $5. The kids and teachers are building teamwork, creating comradery, working for a bigger cause, and learning dedication and commitment to support congenital heart failure in babies and children. Here is a picture of the team, they are calling themselves, Heart Squatters, with their very own trackers. Best of luck to all those doing the challenge! #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary

Riddle students have organized a canned food drive running through April 8th. The students chose a theme for each day, but will gladly accept all varieties of items each day. Students have placed collection boxes in each grade-level hallway. Their goal is to deliver 1000 items to the Mattoon Food Bank at the end of the week. We hope you will join us in supporting this community service project. This promotional poster was created by Aiden, a student in 4th grade. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary #CannedFoodDrive

It's National School Librarian Day and National Library Week and our celebration of Mattoon District Librarians continues. Next up, we want to say thank you to Mrs. Muzzy who works at Riddle Elementary School. "I have been running Riddle Elementary School Library since the school opened in the fall of 2003. I may be biased, but our library is the most beautiful room in the school! I love helping students and staff find just the right books to learn from and enjoy. Our students recently voted in the Illinois Readers Choice Elections. Students in K-3 read from the Monarch Nominated Books, and grades 4-5 read the Bluestem Books. There are so many great books it can be a difficult choice! We recently took a group of students to Barnes and Noble to help select books for our library, and now are gearing up for the Battle of the Books for our upper elementary students. Each and every day is a new adventure in the library." - Mrs. Muzzy #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary
