It's National School Librarian Day and National Library Week and our celebration of Mattoon District Librarians continues. Next up, we want to say thank you to Mrs. Muzzy who works at Riddle Elementary School. "I have been running Riddle Elementary School Library since the school opened in the fall of 2003. I may be biased, but our library is the most beautiful room in the school! I love helping students and staff find just the right books to learn from and enjoy. Our students recently voted in the Illinois Readers Choice Elections. Students in K-3 read from the Monarch Nominated Books, and grades 4-5 read the Bluestem Books. There are so many great books it can be a difficult choice! We recently took a group of students to Barnes and Noble to help select books for our library, and now are gearing up for the Battle of the Books for our upper elementary students. The Mattoon Middle School will be hosting 6th Grade Orientation on April 26th from 5:30-7:00 PM. Please arrive at the Wildcat Gym on time to ensure you don't miss anything. Students will be able to meet the teachers, practice opening lockers, tour the building, and enjoy a scavenger hunt while learning more about MMS. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #MMS #Orientation

Remember the Kindness Cafe? They are a group of students at Riddle Elementary that brainstorm ways to spread kindness and serve others throughout the school and community. Their next "Dollar Drop Day" is Friday, April 1st. They are asking students and staff to donate $1 and wear mismatched clothes. The money raised will go to the Salvation Army (voted on by the school). They created this graphic all on their own to help spread the word about their fundraiser. Congratulations to Riddle Elementary's Camden Hedges for being the 1st student to ever earn 30 Miles participating in the Riddle Run Club. The Kindness Cafe is a group of students at Riddle Elementary that meet twice a week to discuss ways they can spread kindness and serve others throughout the school and community. This is a first-year student ran and operated group, facilitated by multi-age teacher Mrs. Simpson. Students brainstormed "Dollar Drop Days" where each month money is raised for a different place in the community. The place selected each month is voted on by the entire school. For February, $150 was raised and went to the Mattoon Police Department. Pictured is Officer Kasey Alexander accepting the check from the Kindness Cafe. "I absolutely LOVE these projects with these kids. I have found great joy in taking a step back and letting the kids take the reins to plan, organize, brainstorm, etc. every step of the way. I am literally just a guide on the side to step in if they need me. To say I am proud of those kids is an understatement. All the credit goes to them. We want to say thank you to Diamond Bros Insurance & El Vaquero/Tacos Amigos for providing a luncheon for the Riddle School employees on March 10th. The luncheon was to celebrate the success of the SmartDollar Program. SmartDollar is an employee financial wellness program that helps equip participants with budgeting, debt reduction, savings for the future, and retiring with confidence. Riddle Elementary teachers Lyndsey Weber (multi-age 1/2) and Tim Wheeler (3rd grade) attended the Illinois Reading Council conference in Springfield. They attended sessions with authors and educators with a focus on literacy. Tim also presented a session on classroom libraries with co-presenter Jennifer Connolly. Mrs. Hawbaker's 3/4 Multi-Age class worked very hard to set and accomplish daily and weekly goals. As a celebration, the class was donated enough cans for every student to silly string their teacher and student teacher.
