Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and some of the 5th grade have been working on drawing from observation in art class at Williams Elementary. Fruit still lifes were set up around the room. The first two weeks students practiced with fake apples and pears. During the last week of drawing the tables were filled with real fruit including apples, oranges, lemons, limes, mangos, pineapples, and one cantaloupe. After the week of drawing, Leaderslips were pulled to find out which students would get to go home with the real fruit. Leaderslip winners were Vincent Webb, Zamarion Ford, Estherly Pierre, Vivian Fairchild, Noelle Johnson, Karter Wilford, Makailynn Ghaziani, Rhett Bradley, and Savannah Ifft. Each went home with one of our big fruits and our little fruits were handed out at random to other students at dismissal. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #WilliamsElementary

Yesterday, was the annual 4th grade, Egg Drop, at Williams. Students have been studying forces of gravity and their culminating project was to design a package that could protect an egg from breaking when dropped from the ceiling in the cafeteria. Some students tried to protect their eggs with multiple layers of padding, while others opted to make their boxes as light as possible and attached small parachutes or helium balloons to them in order to slow the speed of their crash landings. School custodian Jack Greene did a great job as the official Egg Dropper, a role that he has filled with pride for the past several years. The drops produced mixed results. Some eggs survived and others exploded into several pieces on impact. In either case, some great lessons were learned about the ability to use engineering to overcome forces of nature such as gravity #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #WilliamsElementary
